The Original 315 Desk Lamp – Navigation Edition brings a remarkable chapter of Anglepoise history back into everyday life. First conceived in the 1940s as a specialist adaptation of George Carwardine’s iconic Original 1227 Desk Lamp, it was developed to illuminate navigators’ chart tables aboard long range maritime patrol flying boats during the Second World War. Known internally as Project 315, it was designed as a precision tool, casting focused light onto maps during night operations. Today, that same purposeful spirit has been faithfully re-engineered for the desk, home and studio. While its proportions have been refined for contemporary living, the lamp retains the distinctive character of the original, from its polished aluminium shade to its understated matte black finish. More than a faithful reissue, the Original 315 is a celebration of functional design, engineering heritage and the enduring value of tools made to support meaningful work.

George Carwardine (1887 - 1947) didn't need to invent the Anglepoise lamp to make his name; he was already a practicing engineer of some note, specialising in vehicle suspension systems. In 1929, to explore a longstanding fascination with spring and lever based mechanisms, he began work on the design that would later become his legacy. By 1932, Carwardine was ready to unveil his remarkable invention - a 4-spring lamp, combining unprecedented freedom of movement and perfect balance due to its patented constant spring mechanism. Not long after, the Anglepoise name was registered and in 1935 a 3-spring Anglepoise lamp was released. This was the Original 1227 - the same design produced to this day. Carwardine developed numerous variations on the original Anglepoise design but it's the enduring Original 1227 model that remains the archetypal Anglepoise lamp, and with it, an iconic British design.
