Dune is a sculptural light whose shape is intriguingly amorphous. Designed by Madrid-based Mayice Studio, Dune is a single piece of hand-blown borosilicate glass, enveloping a wood veneer diffuser with a seedpod-like opening on one side. The glass is hand-blown by Eduardo Garuti, an accomplished artisan. With mastery and great dexterity, Garuti is able to reveal the natural beauty found in glass. Dune’s distinctive shape is made up of two symmetrical ends, and an irregular, bulb-shaped centre. The wood veneer diffuser houses the lamp’s dimmable LED light source, and downward light from the seedpod-like opening is softened by the glass. Each Dune lamp is unique: the beauty found in the imperfection of hand-blown glass, with its almost wabi-sabi quality, ensures Dune is like a piece of art. Indeed, each lamp is signed by the artisan, Eduardo Garuti. Available in 2.700K and 4.000K on request.

Mayice

Madrid-based Mayice Studio, a multidisciplinary product design and architecture practice, was established in 2013 by Imanol Calderón Elósegui and Marta Alonso Yebra. With a sharp focus on materials—respecting both history and functionality—each design by Mayice Studio is presented with its own inherent personality, and aims to reflect the soul of a material. In much of Mayice Studio’s work, we find an intelligent dialogue between craft and technology. The Filamento light is an especially pertinent example: a sculptural piece made of a single length of curving glass, Filamento is a study of how light travels through concave and convex forms. When illuminated, the effect is a laser-like ‘filament of light’, that extends from one end of the lamp to the other. When the light is off, the design has a wonderfully ornamental appearance. Filamento is available in both horizontal and vertical configurations. Mayice Studio has experimented with glass in other lighting designs, including the bijou Blow Lamp and the Rfc+ suspension lamp collection, designed for the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja and made using a number of historic moulds.
