Alfred Homann

Alfred Homann

Over the past 40 years, Homann has designed more than ten product lines or 50 different fixtures (such as Nyhavn, Strata, Homann Wall, Rappe Louis, Pulsar system, Kipp Family, AH system, AH Wall system, AH Mini, and Homann Park), all in collaboration with Louis Poulsen, the only lighting manufacturer he has ever teamed up with. All his products are characterised by the fact that the fixture forms the light and the light forms the fixture. All Homann’s designs are imbued with his thoroughness and attention to detail, which are defining of the era of Danish minimalism and functionalism. Homann himself refers to simplicity, clarity and logic as the key words that describe his work. Homann takes a holistic approach, seeking out connections between the object to be designed and the purpose it serves. First comes the sketching as a kind of clarification process. Next, the main idea is chosen, followed by a prototype. This is particularly important to Homann, as drawings cannot depict what he describes as light’s fourth dimension. After that, a long process of fine-tuning the product begins in which the chosen production methods are applied. In addition to his studio in Copenhagen, Alfred Homann established Homann Design Inc. in the United States in 1987-95, where he worked on many different projects and products. His work history testifies to a productive career, which includes several architectural projects as well as furniture designs. Over the years, Alfred Homann has won numerous awards for his buildings, furniture and light fixtures as well as presenting awards to others when he served on the jury of the Danish Industrial Design Prize and other awards. Homann has also travelled the world as a visiting professor, giving lectures as well as exhibiting his designs across the world.
