A lamp in balance. A modern take on the table lamp. The new Gambosa lamp looks like a balanced sculpture in sophisticated colours. Its creator, Mathias Hahn, has provided a modern take on the table lamp, a design that challenges the product’s traditionally static and rigid nature. A design, made of steel, that simplifies the structural elements of a table lamp (shade, stem and base), joining them together without them apparently being connected. Its curved shade seems to float delicately, adding a dynamic touch, whilst the stem is supported on a flat base, the only element to provide stability. Gambosa is a combination of geometries in balance that interact harmoniously with each other. However, the beauty of this table lamp doesn’t come solely from its composition; it’s defined by its palette of colours. The shade is available in pale pink or black, opaque versions that provide a direct light, or in opal methacrylate for softer illumination. The stem is available in orange and moss grey and the base in stone grey. This range of colours has created a matrix collection of different versions, each with their own aesthetic, from subdued to more expressive. It’s available in two sizes: 26 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height, and 36 cm in diameter and 41 cm in height. The cable also forms part of the lamp’s design, descending from the top while a clip guides it, anchors it and stops it from escaping, adding to the overall visual appeal. Gambosa is a revamped table lamp: familiar and recognised as such but surprising in terms of its contemporary shapes and colours.

London based Mathias Hahn was born 1977 in Germany, and graduated from Essen University, Germany, in 2004. Two years later he received a MA degree from the Design Products course at the Royal College of Art under Ron Arad. During his studies in Germany he gained experience in the Product Design department of Volkswagen in Wolfsburg. Since his move to London he worked as a freelance designer for Tom Dixon and in 2006 became one of the founding members of OKAYstudio. From there he is working on diverse projects in the field of industrial for clients like Marset, Ligne Roset, Kvadrat, Kohler, Magazin and ddeutsche Zeitung Magazin. As part of YDMI, organized by the German Design Council, Mathias became Young Professional 2008, and received the 2010 German Design Price as Newcomer/Finalist. Through his background in Industrial Design, working according to production and manufacturing processes, Mathias has a natural desire for designing towards use and functionality. He pictures his work as having two sides. One is based on the idea to create objects that have a place in everyday life and solve a particular problem, the other one is more playful and related to the narrative side of the design process which often functions as a starting point. Depending on the project these two aspects come together and form useful commodities that show a slight layer of humor, social context or even naivety.
