Louis Poulsen Gives the AJ Family A New Colour Palette

Louis Poulsen pays tribute to Arne Jacobsen

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Arne Jacobsen's iconic AJ design. Louis Poulsen is celebrating this with the launch of a dynamic new colour palette for the popular AJ table, floor and wall lamps.

Colours can affect us physically and stimulate our senses. Colours can be used to distinguish, organise and highlight objects. In addition to black, white and pale petroleum, the new collection offers seven colours: dark green, ochre, rusty red, midnight blue, aubergine and two grey shades. The colours are closely linked to Arne Jacobsen's design universe, and have been carefully chosen to best bring out the essence of the AJ lamp.

Design to Shape Light

The AJ lamp shade design is based on two geometric shapes: a cylinder (the socket) and a cone (the shade). The lamp focuses light where it is needed, and is ideal as a work light or a reading lamp.

The AJ lamp's unusual lines and shade volume, and the round hole in the base, give it a highly sculptural appearance.

Designer Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) is one of Denmark's most famous and recognised architects and designers. He succeeded in capturing international trends and making them his own. Arne Jacobsen is viewed as one of the key people behind modernism.

Arne Jacobsen was extremely productive. Over a period of 50 years, he created more than 300 works, spanning all design and construction genres.

Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ table, floor and wall lamps in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where they were an integral part of the overall design for the hotel. The AJ lamp is one of Arne Jacobsen's most popular lamps.

A sense for colour

The AJ lamps are famous for their sculptural design. The new collection consists of both classic and more contemporary hues, all of which highlight the AJ lamp's design.

Arne Jacobsen was a dedicated aesthete, and this is no coincidence. He originally dreamed of being an artist before deciding to study architecture, and his artistic talent and boldness clearly shine through in his unique design idiom and sense of colour. Louis Poulsen therefore feel it is in harmony with the spirit of his works to update the AJ lamps with a range of classic and inspiring colours.
